From March 26, 2001, Nanjing has two bridges over the famous Yangtze River. After three and half years construction, the second Nanjing Yangtze Bridge was open to public traffic the same day. Since 1968, only one bridge - Nanjing Yangtze Bridge (or the first bridge, as we usually say) - had been in service for more than 32 years. From now on, the traffic jam across the river became the history.

The second Nanjing Yangtze Bridge is located at the downstream and 12 km away from the first bridge, it is totally 21.197 km long, composed by two big bridges over the mainstream and the branch of Yangtze River and the majority of the bridge passing through Baguazhou, the island in the river (see the plan, please). The second bridge has six lanes in two directions, the speed of vehicles is limited between 60 and 120 km/h.
